Family Planning Welfare Association of the NT would like to congratulate Sue Moran who recently won the Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia (SHFPA), Coral Lloyd award for 2010.

The Coral Lloyd memorial trophy is awarded annually as a perpetual trophy. Nominations are sought from or in relation to staff members of SHFPA and State/Territory Family Planning Organisations in recognition of their contribution which is of National significance to the nursing role within Family Planning.

Coral was involved with family planning for thirty-five years before her death in 1993. She was a trailblazer with a wonderful commitment to and skill in persuading otherwise reluctant individuals and institutions to support family planning philosophy and practice. She initiated work with nurse's registration councils, nurse's colleges and FPO’s to make family planning an essential part of nurse education. She undertook research and education in many Pacific Island countries during her career.

Sue was nominated by Family Planning NT for her long term commitment and dedication to Sexual Health across the Northern Territory.

Sue commenced working with FPWNT in 1987 in our Alice Springs branch as a casual registered nurse. After moving to Katherine in the early 1990’s with her family Sue quickly became involved in our family planning service operating once a week in Katherine.

To gain extra skills Sue attended the Sexual and Reproductive Health course for nurses in Darwin, a course which is just as popular today. Sexual and Reproductive Health and especially working with young people has developed into her passion. Sue continues to support family planning whilst working as a midwife at the Katherine District Hospital.

Early in 2003 the Katherine clinic coordinator position became vacant and Sue quickly applied successfully. By this time, Sue had become a school nurse.

Today, Sue continues to be FPWNT Katherine coordinator and her support to this organisation is very deserving of the award. The Board and staff of Family Planning Welfare NT are very pleased and congratulate Sue on her  dedication and commitment across the NT.
