Cervical Screening
Cervical Screening Services in the Northern Territory

Cervical screening is a vital part of maintaining reproductive health and preventing cervical cancer. At Family Planning NT, we offer safe, confidential, and inclusive cervical screening services for eligible individuals across the Northern Territory.
What Is Cervical Screening?
Cervical screening is a simple test that checks for human papillomavirus (HPV) – the virus responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. It helps detect changes in the cervix early, before they develop into cancer.
This test has replaced the older Pap smear and is more accurate, requiring screening only every five years if results are normal.
Who Should Be Screened?
You are eligible for cervical screening if you:
- Are aged 25 to 74
- Have a cervix
- Have ever been sexually active
This includes people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Screening is recommended whether or not you’ve had the HPV vaccine, and even if you’ve only had one partner or are no longer sexually active.
Screening Options
You can choose between:
- Self-collection: A private, simple swab you collect yourself under guidance from a healthcare provider.
- Clinician-collected sample: A trained nurse or doctor collects the sample using a speculum.
Both methods are safe and effective. If HPV is detected, further testing may be required.
Symptoms to Watch For:
If you experience any of the following, speak to your doctor – screening may not be appropriate until symptoms are assessed:
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Persistent discharge
- Pelvic pain
Why It Matters
Cervical screening saves lives. It can:
- Detect HPV before it causes harm
- Prevent cervical cancer
- Support early treatment and better outcomes
Australia’s screening and vaccination programs are among the most effective in the world, with a goal to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health issue by 2035.
