Contraceptive Care and Support in the Northern Territory

Contraception empowers you to make informed decisions about if or when you want to become pregnant. At Family Planning NT, we provide accurate information and confidential support to help you choose the method that best suits your body, lifestyle, and values.

What Is Contraception?

Contraception (also known as birth control) includes a range of methods used to prevent pregnancy. Some methods also help protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). No method is 100% effective, but many are highly reliable when used correctly.

Choosing the Right Method.
When selecting a contraceptive method, consider:

  • Effectiveness
  • Ease of use
  • Side effects
  • Protection against STIs
  • Cost and accessibility
  • Your health and lifestyle

Our healthcare professionals can guide you through your options and help you make a choice that feels right for you.

Types of Contraception

We offer information and support for a wide range of contraceptive methods:

Highly effective and low-maintenance options:

  • Implants – small rods placed under the skin that release hormones
  • Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) – small devices inserted into the uterus (hormonal or copper)

Daily, weekly, or monthly options that regulate hormones:

  • Combined oral contraceptive pill
  • Progestogen-only pill (mini pill)
  • Vaginal ring
  • Contraceptive injection (e.g. Depo Provera)

Protect against pregnancy and STIs:

  • Male and female condoms
  • Diaphragms

Used after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure:

  • Emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) – most effective when taken as soon as possible

For those who are sure they don’t want children in the future:

  • Tubal ligation (female sterilisation)
  • Vasectomy (male sterilisation)

Require careful tracking and consistency:

  • Fertility awareness methods
  • Withdrawal
  • Lactational amenorrhoea (LAM)
