Clinic Fees
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we introduce a gap fee to ensure the sustainability of our reproductive and sexual health services. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about fees, Medicare rebates, and payment options.
Why Is There a Gap Fee?
Family Planning NT is committed to delivering high-quality care through experienced staff and well-equipped clinics. However, rising operational costs and stagnant Medicare rebates have made it necessary to introduce a gap fee. This fee helps us continue providing essential services while keeping your out-of-pocket expenses as low as possible.
Medicare Rebates and Out-of-Pocket Costs
If you’re Medicare eligible, you’ll pay a clinic fee on the day of your appointment and receive a rebate from Medicare. The gap fee is the difference between the total fee and the rebate amount.
- Doctor consultations: Fee = Medicare rebate + gap fee
- Nurse consultations: Only the gap fee applies
- Bulk billing: Available for clients under 18 and those with a valid Healthcare Card
- Medical abortion services: Bulk-billed for Medicare eligible clients
Medicare Rebate Processing
We can submit your Medicare claim during your appointment. Refunds are deposited directly into the bank account linked to your EFTPOS card.
Note: Medicare rebates cannot be processed to credit card accounts. If we’re unable to submit your claim, you’ll receive a receipt to lodge with Medicare yourself.
If You’re Under 18 or Hold a Healthcare Card
Clients under 18 or with a valid Healthcare Card are bulk-billed for all appointments except IUD work-up consultations.
Please bring your Medicare and Healthcare cards to avoid gap fees.
If You Don’t Have Your Medicare Card
Our staff cannot access Medicare card details. Without a valid card, you’ll be charged the full consultation fee and any costs for medications or devices. We’ll provide a receipt for private insurance claims, but we do not process them directly.
Non-Medicare Clients
Clients without a valid Medicare card will be charged the full consultation fee plus the gap fee.
- Pathology: Must be submitted to an external provider; fees apply
- Follow-up consultations: Some may be offered free within a timely window. Please contact reception for detailed cost information.
Medication and Device Costs
All clients are charged for medications and contraceptive devices provided during consultations, except those covered under bulk-billed medical abortion services.
Financial Hardship Support
If you’re experiencing financial hardship, please speak with reception before booking. You may be eligible for a bulk-billed consultation or alternative support options.
Outstanding Payments
If you’re unable to pay in full on the day, the gap fee will be waived temporarily. However, future appointments cannot be scheduled until outstanding fees are paid.
Telehealth Appointments
Most follow-up telehealth consultations for results are bulk-billed.
Gap fees may apply for new health concerns, detailed assessments, or management plans.
After your telehealth session, your call will be transferred to reception to finalise payment.
Zero Tolerance Policy
At Family Planning NT, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all clients and staff. Our team is trained to deliver high-quality reproductive and sexual health care with professionalism and compassion. In return, we ask that all individuals treat our staff and fellow clients with the same courtesy and respect.
Our Commitment to Safety
We have a zero tolerance approach to abusive, aggressive, or disrespectful behaviour. This includes verbal abuse, intimidation, harassment, or any conduct that compromises the wellbeing of our staff or clients.
What This Means
- Abusive behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances
- We reserve the right to refuse service to individuals who engage in abusive conduct
- If necessary, the Police may be contacted and the individual will be asked to leave the premises
We thank our clients for their understanding and cooperation in maintaining a safe and respectful clinic environment.

Medical Abortion Services
Medical abortion provision and aftercare appointments are bulk-billed for Medicare eligible clients. This includes:
- The provision appointment, where medication is supplied
- Aftercare appointments within 21 days of provision
These services are delivered with clinical expertise and compassionate support.
Additional Fees and Information
- Procedural appointments during the 21-day aftercare period may incur a clinic fee, as outlined in our current fee schedule.
- Appointments beyond 21 days are considered general consultations and will include a gap fee.
- Extra medication, if required, will incur an additional cost.
Contraception
Family Planning NT offers a range of contraception services to support your reproductive health needs. Our clinics provide access to discounted contraceptives and free condoms, helping reduce barriers to care and avoid unnecessary pharmacy visits.
In-Clinic Contraceptive Access
Clients attending our clinics can purchase select contraceptive options directly from reception.
- Free condoms are available at all clinic locations
- Discounted contraceptives help reduce cost and improve access
IUD Appointments
Clients seeking an IUD insertion or replacement will require two separate appointments:
- Work-up appointment – includes consultation, assessment, and ultrasound referral if needed
- Insertion or replacement appointment – scheduled after suitability is confirmed
If an ultrasound is required, a no-cost telehealth appointment will be arranged approximately seven days prior to your scheduled procedure to review results and confirm eligibility. A follow-up appointment after insertion or replacement is optional but may be recommended by your clinician.
IUD Appointment Fees
- Work-up appointment: Includes consultation fee, gap fee, and booking fee.
- Insertion/replacement appointment: Bulk-billed for Medicare eligible clients.
- Cancellation policy: Booking fee is refundable if cancelled at least 48 hours in advance. No refunds are issued on the day of the appointment.
- Non-Medicare clients: Fees vary – please contact reception for details.
IUD Replacement Considerations
If you are having an IUD replaced and cannot locate the IUD thread, please notify our team. An ultrasound may be required to confirm device position before removal or replacement.
Ultrasound Referrals
If your clinician recommends an ultrasound during your work-up appointment:
- Schedule the ultrasound with a radiology provider
- Contact Family Planning NT to confirm your IUD insertion/replacement appointment
IUD Removal
If you wish to have your IUD removed but cannot feel the threads, removal may be more complex and could incur an additional fee. Your clinician will advise you on next steps and any associated costs.
